AKOBEN

akɔben · the Akan war horn

Prologue: Homowo

No condition is permanent.

A high-speed rescue-shooter set in Accra, a century from now. Glide on one knee, hover at the top of the jump, lock three machines and answer with micro-missiles, then carry every stranger home. Your score is the people you save.

The story

In 2071 the sky fell. And nobody came.

Twenty-nine years later, Accra holds Africa's road to orbit.

The Meridian carries power down from the Kente Ring to forty cities. Off Jamestown, the fallen tail of a Northern tower rusts in the Gulf of Guinea, and tonight something in it is waking. It is Homowo, the Ga festival that hoots at hunger, and the drums are back in the square.

Naa Adjeley Quaye, callsign LIGHTHOUSE, is a NADMO rescue diver turned Frame pilot. She was born the night the sky fell. She keeps count of the people she saves, never of the machines she destroys.

Fourteen people are in the square. The horn is sounding.
Who comes?

The game opens with The Seventy-Two Hours, a fully voiced, illustrated prologue: fifty-four panels on the war nobody came to, and the family it broke.

Dossiers

Who comes

Nobody in AKOBEN is evil for its own sake. Everyone is answering the same question: when the sky falls, who comes?

Naa Adjeley Quaye

NADMO rescue · Frame pilot · 29

A rescue diver from Jamestown who flies a Frame the way she swims: straight in. Funny, warm, reckless, and she will not accept help. She keeps count of the people she saves, never of the machines she destroys.

Named for the dry wind that comes down from the Sahel and dims the sun over Accra. He took the prototype Frame the night the Directorate was born, and wears his mourning cloth over the armour.

The score

Five notes on the war horn

An original score of seven themes. Each grows from the same five-note call on the akoben horn, answered by the talking drum: kpanlogo drums, an orchestra and a choir, a solo cello, and synths from the century in between.

  1. 01 · Akoben
The main theme. The horn calls alone, low strings answer, then the orchestra and the choir lift it.
    1:34
  2. 02 · Homowo Night
The festival fights back: unison horns over kpanlogo drums.
    1:44
  3. 03 · Lighthouse
Adjeley's theme. A solo cello sings it, then the choir lifts it at the rescue.
    1:42
  4. 04 · One Hand
The Directorate: the theme twisted into a descending march.
    1:42
  5. 05 · The Sovereign
Two horns a minor second apart, the city's power failing, and a last stand.
    2:09
  6. 06 · Harmattan
A sister and a brother: wind and a broken flute, a cello and a flute arguing.
    2:10
  7. 07 · Remember Mitad
A lament for the night the sky fell, and a fragile promise on the piano.
    1:15
